Interview with James Rivera of BabySpot.com
Monday, April 14, 2008 | Labels: baby products, babyspot, interviews | |

I've been interviewing interesting Mompreneurs, women entrepreneurs and designers in my blog before, and now for the first time I interviewed a Dadpreneur!
James Rivera is a co-founder of BabySpot.com, a secure site for parents to share the memories and milestones of their babies' lives with friends and family. Amazingly, this site offers full capacity of photo- and videosharing for absolutely free. Keeping in touch with your loved ones and keeping them in abundance of baby photos and videos just got easier!
Katja: BabySpot.com is such a great idea! Tell us about BabySpot.com.
James: BabySpot.com is a wonderful social and informational website for Moms and Dads to upload pictures, videos, write baby journals about their precious little one(s), and share parenting tips and tricks with other new parents, family and friends. Privacy and control over privacy is a key priority and so we give users the ability to set their entire profile to private or by specific video, picture, or baby journal. This ensure that privacy control is completely in the hands of the user. As a Dad myself I completely understand how protective parents are about items relating their child, as I am extremely protective of anything related to my son, Danny. It is because of this that we give parents the rights to all of content that they publish. We truly hand over all security settings to our BabySpot members.
Katja: When did you start BabySpot and what inspired you?
James: BabySpot.com was founded in November of 2006, but the seeds of it's launch took place on February 3, 2006 when my first little bundle of joy, Daniel Rivera, was born. My wife and I loved taking pictures and videos but we did not want to share pictures and videos on other social networks as we were concerned of who really was on the other side of these web portals. So instead of using these sites we began to send pictures in email after email after email to all of my family and friends. One of my very good friends that was receiving the pictures, was Zameer Upadhya, who after receiving the millionth picture from me joked that I needed my own "BabySpot" on the internet to share pictures of my son. That comment brought the entrepreneur in us both out and so that very day I bought the domain name "www.BabySpot.com" and we decided to build a website that would be a safe and secure web portal for parents just like myself to share the precious moments of your young one's. And so, www.BabySpot.com was born!
Katja: How can parents join in?
James: All parents, family members, and friends, can simply go to our home page www.BabySpot.com and click on sign up. We understand how busy every one's life is, especially that of a parent! So we made the sign up process very simple and straight forward, requiring limited information, anyone can sign up in less than 2 or 3 minutes.
Katja: How much does it cost to get a BabySpot account?
James: BabySpot.com is 100% free! As a parent I understand how expensive raising a child can be and so we decided to keep our service completely free to host pictures, videos, and blogs.
Katja: That's really awesome. I noticed "Baby Blurps" on your site, what are they?
James: I have a lot of fun with Baby Blurps! Baby Blurps are status updates of what your baby is doing right now in real time! It's like a baby twitter (the status update tool)....so "what's your baby doing now." It's a great way to keep your family and friends up to date with your baby or child's current status.
Katja: That's really neat, and the best thing about BabySpot.com is that it's safe. Does it mean that your baby's own page is viewable only to people who parents want to share it with?
James: Yes, your BabySpot profile can be completely private and only available to those people that you specify or it can be set to public where anyone that joins the site can see your profile. We place privacy settings completely in control of the user. As a parent I prefer to have control over what I want to show and whom I want to show it with and so that is why we decided to offer the same to other parents.
Katja: What is the best part of BabySpot for you personally?
James: I love sharing pictures and videos of my little one with my family and friends and not have to worry about my memories getting into the wrong hands. BabySpot.com gives me great peace of mind. As I mentioned before one of my favorite parts are the "Baby Blurps" as I update it numerous times through out the day! From a business perspective it has been great to work on something that I am so passionate about as it relates to my own child. I also am lucky to work with a business partner who is a great friend and leader.
Katja : What has been the highlight of BabySpot so far?
James: One of the highlights so far has been when parents have emailed us and told us how grateful they have been that we have provided them with a free, safe, and secure tool for them to share their memories!! The feedback from users here in America and across the world has truly been encouraging and motivating!
Where do you see BabySpot in five years?
James: In five years from now, we see www.BabySpot.com as being the number one trusted choice for new parents, family, and friends to share the precious moments of their baby or grandchildren with other new parents, family, and friends from across the world.
Katja: Thank you so much for your time and telling us more about BabySpot.com!
James: Thank you, and welcome to make your own pages for your children at BabySpot.com! Sphere: Related Content
